An Educated Citizenry

March 18th, 2008 · No Comments

A democratic society depends upon an informed and educated citizenry.
- Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826)

With “No Child Left Behind” creating an educational environment of “teaching to the test” - emphasizing rote regurgitation of information instead of the development of sophisticated critical thinking skills - it’s no wonder we ended up with eight years of leadership by a C-student who can’t even speak proper English … and why we allowed him to lead our country into war.

It’s easy to lead people if all they know is what you feed them, and what you feed them is fear of the unknown and hate of anyone that’s not you. Without critical thought, people can be led like cattle, easily herded by the threatening barks of circling dogs.

It’s much more difficult to “herd” people if they perceive and understand that other perspectives exist, and thus seek alternative sources of information in order to learn about those alternative points of view. Armed with greater knowledge and real education, people are no longer cattle - they are humans capable of logic and reason who can see that the dogs’ barks are empty threats.

Let’s hope for an “informed and educated citizenry” rising to the call for this year’s U.S. Presidential election. With the country in shambles and a recession looming, we need a great leader who relies on knowledge rather than fear to guide their decisions and actions.
